News Los Angeles Romance Lingers; Mamet Farce Extends Through Nov. 20 The Atlantic Theater Company production of David Mamet's Romance starring Larry Bryggman and Ed Begley, Jr. extends its run at Los Angeles' Mark Taper Forum.

Neil Pepe directs the California run, which starting performances Sept. 29, kicking off the 39th Taper season. Romance officially opened Oct. 9 for a run originally slated through Nov. 13. Strong ticket sales bolstered the work to now be extended for an additional week through Nov. 20.

"We are extending Romance because it is, quite simply, so f***ing funny and the demand for seats is so high,” stated Center Theatre Group artistic director Michael Ritchie in a nod to the forthright playwright.  The CTG head also added, "I thought it was hilarious when I read it.  It's good to see that L.A. agrees with me.

Original Off-Broadway cast members Larry Bryggman (Twelve Angry Men, Proof), Jim Frangione, Steven Goldstein and Steven Hawley are joined in Los Angeles by Noah Bean, Ed Begley, Jr. and Todd Weeks.

In Romance, Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Mamet (Glengarry Glen Ross) pens a "farce" set in a New York courtroom "where a low profile trial is taking place [wherein] the defendant and his attorney test the boundaries of truth and ethics, the prosecutor strains to keep his household together and the bailiff struggles to keep the judge from an accidental drug overdose," according to production notes. The work debuted at the Atlantic Theater Company earlier this year.

Begley, Jr. is best known for his performance as an actor in the television series "St. Elsewhere." His film credits include "This Is Spinal Tap," "The Accidental Tourist" and "Transylvania 6-5000." The actor — who appeared opposite Jeff Goldbum in the Pittsburgh CLO's The Music Man last season — has also made a number of appearances as recurring characters on TV in "7th Heaven," "Providence" and "Six Feet Under." The Atlantic's world premiere design team has reassembled for the run including Robert Brill (sets), Sarah Edwards (costumes), James F. Ingalls (lighting) and Obadiah Eaves (sound). The fight director is once again Rick Sordelet join by new production stage manager Matthew Silver.

The 2005-2006 Taper season continues with Robert Schenkkan's Lewis and Clark Reach the Euphrates (Nov. 30, 2005-Jan. 22, 2006), Anton Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard (Feb. 2-March 19, 2006), Joshua Sobol's iWitness (March 30-May 21, 2006), Alfred Uhry's Without Walls (June 1-July 16, 2006) and Culture Clash's Water & Power (July 27-Sept. 17, 2006).
