A distinguished lineup of performers will read scenes from Nottage's plays (Ruined, Intimate Apparel and the upcoming By the Way, Meet Vera Stark), including Quincy Tyler Bernstine, Viola Davis, Kimberly Hébert Gregory, Russell Hornsby, Condola Rashad and Anika Noni Rose. The Steinberg Award is presented biennially by The Harold and Mimi Steinberg Charitable Trust. (The award is also known as the "Mimi" Award.) Tony Kushner received the award, which "honors the artistic achievement of an American playwright whose body of work has made significant contributions to the American theatre," in 2008. It comes with a cash prize of $200,000, making it the largest award ever created to honor and encourage artistic achievement in the American theatre. The "Mimi" Award itself is a statue designed by Tony Award-winning scenic designer and architect David Rockwell.
Nottage received the Pulitzer Prize for Ruined. The Obie Award winner's other plays include Intimate Apparel, Fabulation and Crumbs From the Table of Joy.
The Advisory Committee, who determines the nomination and selection process, as well as the criteria for the Steinberg Award, currently consists of Susan Booth, Polly Carl, David Emmes, Oskar Eustis, Todd London, Eduardo Machado and Lynne Meadow.
