News MAC Award Winner Andersen to Sing with Army Band Aug. 18 Award-winning singer-songwriter Tom Andersen, who starred in the long running San Francisco revue Beach Blanket Babylon, will be the special guest soloist during the United States Continental Army Band's Aug. 18 concert.

The 7 PM evening at Continental Park in Ft. Monroe, VA is part of the band's 71st annual "Music Under the Stars" series and will feature pieces by Leonard Bernstein, Artie Shaw and John Philip Sousa. Andersen will perform his own tunes as well as those by John Bucchino, Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein. About the upcoming concert, Andersen told Playbill.com, "It's going to be a real thrill singing with a 56-piece band, especially hearing some of my own songs arranged for them." Captain Tod Addison, who leads the band, added, "We try to reach a wide demographic, so our musical choices are limited to Broadway show tunes, older pop and patriotic songs and marches. But the beauty of music from composers such as Tom Andersen and John Bucchino is their lyrics and tunes are accessible and interesting to all age groups and all backgrounds, so their music is actually perfect for what we do."

A romantic tenor, Tom Andersen has played Carnegie Hall, Weill Recital Hall and Town Hall, and has headlined at Tavern on the Green, Maxim's, the Russian Tea Room, the Algonquin and Eighty Eight's. He is the recipient of four Backstage Bistro Awards and five MAC Awards, and his solo recordings include "The Journey," "Who Knows?" and "Far Away Places." Andersen was also featured in the Off-Broadway revue "Cabariety."
