News MacDermot's The Human Comedy to Open Barrington Stage's 2006 Season The Barrington Stage Company— the Massachusetts theatre company that presented the world premiere of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee — has announced its 2006 season opener.

The acclaimed theatre company will present Galt MacDermot's musicalization of William Saroyan's The Human Comedy June 22-July 15, 2006. Directed by Julianne Boyd, the production will feature choreography by Lara Teeter and musical direction by Darren Cohen. The Human Comedy boasts music by Hair's Galt MacDermot and book and lyrics by William Dumaresq. The show, according to press notes, is a "sung-through musical coming-of-age tale of Homer Macauley, a telegraph messenger who becomes a witness to the sorrows and joys of a small California town during World War II."

The musical — directed by Wilford Leach — premiered at the Public Theater in 1983. The Human Comedy transferred to Broadway's Royale Theatre in April 1984 with a cast that included Rex Smith, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio and Stephen Geoffreys.
