The Center Theatre Group, which had announced Waitress would end its Kirk Douglas Theatre season, has delayed the production until next season.

"David is entertaining some exciting casting choices for A Waitress in Yellowstone," said CTG artistic director Michael Ritchie in a statement. "By postponing his musical until next season, we're able to give him the time needed to pursue these possibilities."

Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Mamet's first foray into musical theatre follows the story of the title service worker who, on the eve of her trip to the national park to celebrate her son's 10th birthday, discovers a Congressman stealing her tips and reports him to the police.

Michael Pressman will instead direct the William Inge drama Come Back, Little Sheba starring "Law & Order" and "Lackawanna Blues" star S. Epatha Merkerson. The work will fill the same slot in the season, June 17-July 15.

Merkerson will take on the role of Lola, "a woman lost in her memories and caught in a stale, hapless 25-year marriage with a man who has his own struggles with the past," as materials explain. "Lola opens their home to a fresh-faced young boarder and soon the precarious balance of the couple's relationship is shaken by [her] youthful sexuality and vivaciousness." The Kirk Douglas currently houses Dogeaters (through Feb. 11). It will next present the world premiere of the musical Sleeping Beauty Wakes (a CTG Deaf West Theatre co-production) with a book by Tony Award winner Rachel Sheinkin (The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee) and music by Brendan Milburn and Valerie Vigoda — of the band GrooveLily. Jeff Calhoun (Big River) will direct and choreograph the production, which runs March 31-May 13.
