News Marc Wolf's The Road Home, Playwrights Mann, Odets, More Part of CUNY Events The Martin E. Segal Theatre Center of City University of New York's Graduate Center has announced its spring programs, which will feature new theatre works from Morocco, Italy and Argentina as well as a new documentary theatre work by Another American Asking and Telling's Marc Wolf and tribute to Clifford Odets.

The theatre events are free and open to the public at the Segal Theatre Center at 365 Fifth Ave. (near 34th St.). The 2006 spring theatre programs continue the "emphasis on world theatre, the fast growing discipline of documentary theatre and the experience of immigration, highlighting the commitment to bridging the gap between the academic and professional performing arts communities," according to a release.

The lineup is as follows:

  • May 3 at 6:30 PM: "An Evening with Italian playwright Dacia Maraini"
    Featuring readings from the author's Mary Stuart and Dialogue of a Prostitute and Her Client, the evening will also include a panel discussion with Living Theater's Judith Malina and Hanon Resnikov.
  • May 11 @ 6:30 PM: "An Evening with Marc Wolf"
    Wolf's new work The Road Home: Re-Membering America (which just made its world premiere at Boston's Huntington Theatre Company) will be performed in excerpts. The documentary play (as his previous gay-military work Another American...) delves into his own experience in his long drive across the U.S. immediately after September 11.

  • May 15 @ 6:30 PM: "An Evening With Emily Mann"
    A look at the works of the noted documentary playwright of Still Life, Execution of Justice and Greensboro: A Requiem (respectively about the Vietnam War, the Harvey Milk murder and the killing of anti-Klu Klux Klan demonstrators). Mann, artistic director of the McCarter Theatre in Princeton, has also directed at her homestage, on Broadway and across the country.
  • May 16 @ 6:30 PM: The Sheep and the Whale by Ahmed Ghazali
    Moroccan-born playwright "looks at the issue of the immigrant experience when a boat full of Moroccan stowaways is struck by a Russian freighter in the Straits of Gibraltar" in this drama which unfolds on ship's deck. Translated by Bobby Theodore.
  • May 24 @ 6:30 PM: "Argentinean Theatre: Buenos Aires in Translation (BaiT)"
    Excerpts from the works of four Buenos Aires-based playwrights — Lola Arias, Federico Leon, Rafael Spregelburd and Daniel Veronese — to be fully staged at P.S. 122 this fall.
  • June 5 (10 AM-6:30 PM): "Celebrating 100 Years of Clifford Odets"
    A day-long celebration of the birthday centennial of the dramatist behind Awake and Sing!, Waiting For Lefty, Paradise Lost, Rocket to the Moon and Golden Boy. The event will feature a screening of the 1989 PBS film "Broadway Dreamers: The Legacy of the Group Theatre," a symposium with theatre artists and academics on his later plays, politics and years in Hollywood as well as a scene readings of Odets' plays, the film of his last TV interview and excerpts from an adaptation of his 1940 journal "The Time Is Ripe."
