A television adaptation of Donald Margulies' Collected Stories will air on PBS on Jan. 16 at 9 PM. Linda Lavin and Samatha Mathis star in the literary two-hander. Margulies himself penned the adaptation for the small screen. Collected Stories tells of the relationship between an elderly, Greenwich Village writing legend and the burgeoning young writer she takes under her wing. The nurturing nature of the relationship quickly turns sour when the novelist finds that her apprentice has raided her life to feed a work of fiction.
The play was first seen in New York at Manhattan Theatre Club. Maria Tucci and Debra Messing starred. The work had a longer life, however, in a subsequent commercial outing at the Lucille Lortel Theatre, starring Uta Hagen as the literary lioness.
