Classic Arts News Mark Morris to Try His Hand at Conducting Choreographer Mark Morris will conduct the Mark Morris Dance Group Ensemble and the Juilliard Choral Union as part of the Mark Morris Dance Group's 25th-anniversary season at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in March 2006.
Morris will lead the groups in accompanying his early Gloria, set to Vivaldi's Gloria in D.

"I know this piece very well and love it, so why not conduct it?" Morris said. "It will be an exciting and slightly daunting challenge."

Morris has been receiving conducting lessons from Jane Glover, music director of Chicago's Music of the Baroque, and contemporary-music specialist Stefan Asbury, among others.

The MMDG has nearly always performed to live music throughout its history, and since 1996 has given more than 700 consecutive performances with live accompaniment.

The 25th-anniversary season at BAM runs March 8-23, 2006. In addition to Gloria, it will include revivals of V (2001), Grand Duo (1993), All Fours (2003), Going Away Party (1990); the New York premieres of Cargo and Candleflowerdance (both from 2005); and a double bill consisting of Morris's settings of two operas: Virgil Thomson's Four Saints in Three Acts—Morris's version, which compresses the original opera, premiered in 2000—and Purcell's Dido and Aeneas, which the premiered in 1990.

The season will also include a film series, discussions with collaborators such as designer Isaac Mizrahi, and other ancillary events.
