Mary Zimmerman's Metamorphoses Will Open Lookingglass' 2012-2013 Season | Playbill

News Mary Zimmerman's Metamorphoses Will Open Lookingglass' 2012-2013 Season
Tony Award-winning director Mary Zimmerman's adaptation of Ovid's Metamorphoses, in which myths emerge from a pool of water, will open the Lookingglass Theatre's 25th anniversary season in fall 2012.

Metamorphoses debuted at Chicago's Lookingglass in 1998, prior to a 2001 Off-Broadway run at Second Stage Theatre and a heralded Broadway transfer at the Circle in the Square Theatre in 2002, where it ran for over 400 performances.

Zimmerman earned a Tony for her direction. The production received Tony Award nominations for Best Play and Best Scenic design.

Using imagery that was both timeless and contemporary, Zimmerman took a collection of myths, including Eros, Midas, Narcissus, Orpheus and Eurydice, and staged them in and around a shallow pool. The audience was seated on three sides of the action (with front row splash seats). Willy Schwarz composed the original music for the production that is also available on disc.

The Chicago Tribune reports that members of the original Lookingglass cast, who were also seen in the New York production, will reunite for the 10th anniversary staging of Metamorphoses.

The production is also scheduled to play Arena Stage in winter 2013.
