Former Spice Girl Mel B, Sandra Tsing Loh, Michelle Yeoh, Aasif Mandvi, Gabriel Iglesias are also scheduled to play cartoon dogs and cats in the Western-style film, which will be directed by Chris Bailey and Mark Koetsier, from a script by Ed Stone and Nate Hopper. Brooks reportedly will play the Shogun, "a misguided but benevolent leader." Cera will play the lead role of Hank, a mutt who longs to become a legendary samurai and save the suspiciously named town of Kakamucho from "becoming the litter box of a nefarious feline warlord."
Their voices have already been recorded, and the film is due in cinemas Aug. 4, 2017.
Co-producer Yair Laundau was quoted as saying, "Throughout the recording sessions from Mel Brooks to Mel B, this cast has not only met the humor, but raised the level of comedy and heart in this unique homage to 'Blazing Saddles.' Ed and Nate delivered a first-rate script in 'Blazing Samurai,' a story about cats and dogs getting along that will appeal to everyone whether they’ve seen the original comedy classic or not."
