Stage and screen director Sam Mendes (Broadway's Gypsy, Cabaret, the film "American Beauty") and his wife, actress Kate Winslet, have announced that they have parted ways.

A statement released on the couple's behalf read: "Kate and Sam are saddened to announce that they separated earlier this year. The split is entirely amicable and is by mutual agreement. Both parties are fully committed to the future joint parenting of their children."

Mendes just directed The Bridge Project's As You Like It and The Tempest at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. He collaborated with Winslet on the film "Revolutionary Road." The couple have a six-year-old son and also a nine-year-old daughter from Winslet's first marriage to Jim Threapleton.
