Eric Myers visits with Michael Ball, London’s musical-theater superstar, as he returns to the New York stage for the first time in 16 years to star in New York City Opera’s new production of Patience

Patience, according to production notes, concerns "twenty maidens [who] are lovesick for two pretentious poets, but the bards are vying for Patience, the simple village milkmaid who cares nothing for their verses. She believes in a purer love, the kind devoid of artifice. Add to the charades a brigade of macho dragoons and a most unladylike Lady, all of whom learn that the key to winning in love is to not play the game at all." Michael Ball made his Broadway debut as Alex in Andrew Lloyd Webber's Aspects of Love, a role he created on the London stage. His other London stage credits include The Woman in White, The Pirates of Penzance, Les Misérables, The Phantom of the Opera, Passion and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Ball's numerous, best-selling solo recordings include "Centre Stage," "Christmas," "Live at the Royal Albert Hall," "The Movies," "The Musicals," "First Love," "Always" and "Michael Ball."

Patience will be performed at the New York State Theater Sept. 10 at 8 PM, Sept. 12 at 7:30 PM, Sept. 17 at 1:30 PM, Sept. 23 at 8 PM, Sept. 27 at 7:30 PM, Sept. 30 at 8 PM, Oct. 2 at 1:30 PM and Oct. 5 at 7:30 PM. Visit www.nycopera.com for more information.
