Michael Langham will be the director of the upcoming Broadway revival of Noel Coward's lesser-known, latter-day work, Waiting in the Wings. Producer Alexander H. Cohen plans to stage the Coward play on Broadway in 1999. The production would coincide with the centennial of the English playwright, songwriter and wit, who was born in 1899. Dec. 16, Coward's birthday, is targeted as the opening date.

Show spokesman David Rothenberg said the play -- which is about a group of elderly actresses living in a retirement home and features a host of roles for older performers -- will be "tweaked" to render it more up to date. Rothenberg said the producers have the permission of the Coward estate to make the minor revisions.

No casting has been set, though the production is reportedly seeking several mature name actresses.

Coward is the author of such works as Private Lives, Hay Fever, Present Laughter, Design for Living and The Vortex.

The 78-year old Cohen began his producing career 57 years ago. Angel Street, his first notable credit, opened in 1941. Cohen also produced the televised Tony Awards for 20 years, as well as three "Night of 100 Stars" specials. He has received countless awards including a Tony, Emmy, Oscar, Theatre World's Showman of the Year, The Shubert Foundation Award and numerous others. He recently appeared in an Off-Broadway solo, Star Billing, where he shared anecdotes of his career and admonitions about where commercial theater might be heading.
