The Broadway-bound stage version of the 1967 musical film, Thoroughly Modern Millie, will have a workshop in New York City May 17-June 26. Michael Mayer (You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown; Side Man), who is directing the piece, will supervise, with David Marquez doing choreography, and Michael Rafter serving as musical director.

Millie is being produced by Michael Levitt, Fox Theatricals and actress and sometime Broadway performer Whoopi Goldberg (A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum). No casting has been announced. (Actors' Equity is holding auditions for lead and ensemble roles for the workshop in mid-February.)

"It's a stage version of the original movie," Leavitt told Playbill On-Line (Apr. 17, 1998). The current focus, he said, is on seeing which songs from the movie to maintain, while adding "different songs from that era, plus new songs." Leavitt declined to say which composer(s) was involved in the project.

The show's libretto will be based on the Richard Morris screenplay and penned by Morris and Dick Scanlon, an editor at Poz magazine. (Morris died in 1997 after completing work on the script with Scanlon.)

Michael Mayer, who staged the musical Triumph of Love and the acclaimed revival of A View From The Bridge at Broadway's Roundabout Theatre Company, is currently at work on the Roundabout revival of The Lion in Winter.
