Tony Award nominee Michele Lee is set to star in the East Coast premiere of Summer of Love at The Ogunquit Playhouse in Maine beginning June 22.

Lee will play the role of Mama, the earth mother of the Golden Gate Park band of hippies, in the production that will run through July 16.

The new musical by Roger Bean features songs of the late 1960s by artists including The Mamas and the Papas, Donovan, Janis Joplin and Jefferson Airplane.

According to Ogunquit notes, "Be prepared for a head on collision between cultures when a conservative bride runs away from the altar and runs into a VW bus full of hippies from Haight-Ashbury. With a little help from the hippies and dropouts of San Francisco, she comes to realize she has to make her own kind of music!"

Lee was nominated for a Tony Award in 1974 for her performance in Seesaw and again in 2001 for her performance in The Tale of the Allergist's Wife. She has also been seen on Broadway in Bravo Giovanni, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying and Vintage '60. The actress is best known for playing Karen Mackenzie in the CBS series "Knots Landing," for which she received an Emmy nomination.

Following Summer of Love, The Ogunquit Playhouse will present The Music Man July 20-Aug. 20 and Legally Blonde, featuring Emmy Award-winning actress Sally Struthers as Paulette, Aug. 24-Sept. 17. The season will conclude with Miss Saigon Sept. 21-Oct. 23. The Ogunquit Playhouse is located at 10 Main Street, Ogunquit, ME.
