Migdalia Cruz's new play, Featherless Angels, receives workshop performances Mar. 10-12 at the Studio/Mobius Theatre, presented by Connecticut Repertory Theatre. According to a CRT spokesperson, the 10th will be an open rehearsal; the 11th will either be an open rehearsal or a public performance; the 12th will be a public performance. Former Classic Stage Company artistic director David Esbjornson (New York's Public Theatre's The Ride Down Mount Morgan) directs.
Commissioned by CRT, the play follows seven battle-beaten children from Cambodia, Bosnia, the South Bronx, Nicaragua, Northern Ireland, East L.A. and a concentration camp as they confront the demons of war in a metaphysical landscape.
CRT first workshopped the production in summer of 1998. CRT hopes this second workshop, which will incorporate design elements, leads to a full production of the play next season.
One of America's foremost Latina playwrights, Cruz's work has been presented at Classic Stage Company, Playwrights Horizons, Brooklyn Academy of Music, INTAR, American Repertory Theatre, Houston Grand Opera and Cornerstone Theatre Company in Los Angeles. She has written 29 plays including Salt, Fur, Another Part of the House, The Have Littles and Miriam's Flowers.
Featherless Angels features Chriselle Almeida, James Barry, Umit Celebi, Elaina Erika Davis, Jose Antonio Garcia, Timothy Hampton, Beth Leone, Briana Trautman-Maier, Melissa Nedell and Mark Kenneth Smaltz. Daniel Tracy (sets), Jayde Chabot (costumes), Joseph Monaghan, III (lights), Jeffrey Carlson (sound) and Bart P. Roccoberton, Jr. (puppets).
