More than 50 years ago, Skylight began as Skylight Theatre and evolved through the years to Skylight Comic Opera, The Skylight and, currently, Skylight Opera Theatre. Beginning Feb. 1, the company will become Skylight Music Theatre to reflect its mission, repertoire and education programs.
According to Skylight, "[the company] firmly believes that opera is a critical part of the music theatre canon, and its dedication to performing at least one opera a year will not change. But because it produces the full spectrum of music theatre, the name 'Skylight Opera Theatre' doesn't accurately reflect the full breadth of productions. Skylight's goal in the name change is to accurately capture the range of experiences patrons may have throughout each season."
The current season includes Gershwin and Friends, directed by Bill Theisen (Jan. 27-Feb. 12); Daddy Long Legs, featuring music and lyrics by Paul Gordon with a book by John Caird (March 9-April 1); Things That Go Ding, featuring Michael "Ding" Lorenz, Ray Jivoff and Jamie Johns (April 27-May 6); and Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's Sunday in the Park With George (May 18-June 10).
Skylight Music Theatre "will continue to seek out productions that have a moving story to tell and compelling music through which to tell it."
Skylight Music Theatre is located at 158 N. Broadway in Milwaukee, WI. For more information, visit www.skylightopera.com.
