Following the Lowry engagement, the production will transfer to the King's Head Theatre in London on Jan. 26, 2011.

Miss Nightingale features book, music and lyrics by Matthew Bugg, who will also direct and choreograph. The cast will include Ilan Goodman (National Theatre's Danton's Death), Richard Shelton (Rat Pack Confidential, Mamma Mia!) and Amber Topaz (a neo-burlesque performer who began her career in Les Miserables and other West End musicals).

According to press notes, the show "combines emotionally charged songs with powerful drama and burlesque-style performance. Two men struggle in the shadows of a war-torn city to thrust a new star into the spotlight. Maggie Brown dreams of becoming a famous singer as she nurses wounded soldiers in London’s bombed out East End. With her songwriter George, a Jewish refugee, she auditions at every night club and cabaret bar in town. But nobody wants their act. Their luck and lives change when they meet the handsome, charming and wealthy Sir Frank Conner. A plan is hatched and the mysterious Miss Nightingale explodes onto the stage. Polite society is shocked by her scandalous exploits, outfits and songs. And she takes the West End by storm. But out of the spotlight, sexual tensions and forbidden love threaten to reveal secrets even more dangerously explosive than the Blitz. How much would you risk to be with the one you loved?"

Miss Nightingale marks the first musical Bugg has written. He has worked as a composer, musical director and choreographer at many theatres throughout England, and is an associate artist at the Mercury Theatre Company. He has also played Ariel in Shakespeare's The Tempest.
