After officially opening on Broadway July 25, the Moulin Rouge! musical has its eyes on down under. An Australian production is slated to begin at Melbourne's Regent Theatre in 2021—20 years after the Baz Luhrmann film, shot primarily in Sydney, premiered.

The production hails from the Sydney-based Global Creatures (led by Gerry Ryan and Carmen Pavlovic), who are also behind the Broadway engagement as well as the stage adaptations of King Kong and Australia's Muriel's Wedding.

“It was an honor for our Australian born company to premiere a new musical on Broadway...We’re thrilled to bring Moulin Rouge! The Musical home to Melbourne, the heart of fashion, art and culture,” the two said in a joint statement, while also acknowledging Victorian Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events Martin Pakula's role in getting the musical to Australia.

Exact dates and casting will be announced later.
