According to BAM, the piece "explores the physical and metaphoric meanings of sanctuary, safety, and home." Performers include the German ensemble musikFrabrik and the vocal group trio mediæval.
Shelter follows BAM's commissions of The New Yorkers and Lost Objects from Gordon, Lang, and Wolf for the 2003 and 2004 Next Wave Festivals. It had its world premiere in March in Cologne.
