Classic Arts News Multimedia Shelter Has U.S. Premiere at BAM The Brooklyn Academy of Music presents the American premiere tonight of the multimedia music-theater work Shelter as part of its Next Wave Festival.
Shelter, which was commissioned by BAM, has music by composers Michael Gordon, David Lang, and Julia Wolfe, the founders of the New York collective Bang on a Can; a libretto by writer Deborah Artman, who collaborated with Lang on his opera Acquanetta; film by Bill Morrison; and projections by designer Laurie Olinder.

According to BAM, the piece "explores the physical and metaphoric meanings of sanctuary, safety, and home." Performers include the German ensemble musikFrabrik and the vocal group trio mediæval.

Shelter follows BAM's commissions of The New Yorkers and Lost Objects from Gordon, Lang, and Wolf for the 2003 and 2004 Next Wave Festivals. It had its world premiere in March in Cologne.

Shelter runs through November 19 at the BAM Harvey Theater. Tickets are $20-$45. Call 718-36-4100 or visit www.bam.org.
