Musical Project from Josh Gad, Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz Finds a Studio | Playbill

News Musical Project from Josh Gad, Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz Finds a Studio It looks like Universal Studios, home of "Furious 7," "E.T." and "Jurassic Park," has won the bidding war to produce the new untitled movie musical project being pitched by a solid-platinum creative team of composer Alan Menken, lyricist Stephen Schwartz, writer-director Jeremy Garelick and Tony-nominated star Josh Gad, according to Deadline. The story wasn't clear on whether the project would be a stage musical first.

The team received unprecedented seven-figure offers April 9 from Disney, Paramount, Warner Bros’ New Line, Sony Pictures, Fox and Universal. Deadline reported that Universal won with a bid in the "low seven figures."

The title was not revealed, but Deadline reported that the film will be "a contemporary vehicle for Gad to play a domestic who integrates into [a] family with a busy single mother, and becomes an important part of the clan."

The idea for the musical comedy was hatched by Gad (a Tony nominee for The Book of Mormon, and the voice of the snowman in "Frozen") along with Garelick, the team behind the recent film comedy "The Wedding Ringer."

The project was first reported April 9, the same day Gad's TV series, "The Comedians" with Billy Crystal, debuted on FX. The busy Gad is currently in London shooting the live-action film of Disney's musical Beauty And The Beast, in which he plays Le Fou.

Multiple Oscar and Tony winner Menken (Beauty and the Beast, Newsies, Little Mermaid, Sister Act, et al) would write the music. Schwartz (Wicked, Godspell, Pippin) would write just the lyrics, though he is also a composer. Menken and Schwartz collaborated on the score for the Disney film "Pocahontas," and Schwartz, working alone, won an Oscar for "The Prince of Egypt."
