Herrndorf was appointed in September 1999. He has focused on expanding the NAC's activities across Canada and on developing the center's youth and educational programs. Herrndorf launched the biannual Scene Festivals in Ottawa, featuring artists from specific regional areas. He also created the NAC's annual Summer Music Institute for talented young musicians.

Herrndorf's tenure has seen six consecutive years of budget surpluses, following cutbacks and deficits in the 1990s; strong subscription sales; and the creation of the NAC Foundation, which raised C$6.5 million last year.
