News Neil Patrick Harris to Join "The Smurfs" on Screen Neil Patrick Harris and Alan Cumming are on board for Sony Picture's live action/animated hybrid feature film of the popular cartoon series "The Smurfs," according to Variety.

Harris ("How I Met Your Mother," Cabaret, Rent, Assassins) will be the only live actor in the film that will be directed by Raja Gosnell. Jonathan Winters, who lent his voice to multiple Smurf roles in the original series, will return to voice Papa Smurf. Cumming (Cabaret, Spider Man) will voice Gutsy Smurf, with pop singer Katy Perry as Smurfette and comedian George Lopez as Grouchy Smurf.

Harris has a full plate. In addition to his regular series "How I Met Your Mother," he served as a guest judge for "American Idol" auditions, will appear on an upcoming episode of the Fox hit "Glee" and will also direct Rent at the Hollywood Bowl.
