New Musical The Folk Singer to Debut Off-Broadway | Playbill

News New Musical The Folk Singer to Debut Off-Broadway Tom Attea and Arthur Abrams’ folk musical will have its world premiere at Theater for the New City this fall.

Theater for the New City will present the world premiere of The Folk Singer, with a book and lyrics by Tom Attea, and music composed by Arthur Abrams. The new musical tells the story of a young musician who dreams of creating songs that are as influential as those written by celebrated folk artists Bob Dylan and Woody Guthrie.

The production is directed by Mark Marcante. The Folk Singer will begin performances September 29 and officially open October 9 at Theater for a New City, located at 155 First Avenue at 10th Street, New York.

“I wrote the book and lyrics to The Folk Singer in order to create a character-based work for the theatre that would comment on today’s times,” explains Attea in a press statement. “I believe that, given the severity of the problems in America and around the world, new folk songs would be expected to have a greater presence than they do. The centerpiece of the show, ’A Folk Festival for Today,’ provided the occasion to write lyrics with contemporary substance.”

Set design is by Mark Marcante, with lighting design by Alexander Bartienieff, sound design by Alex Santullo and prop design by Lytza Colon. Danielle Hauser is the assistant director.

Tickets for The Folk Singer can be purchased by calling the box office on (212) 254-1109, SmartTix on (212) 868-4444 or online at smarttix.com.
