New York Philharmonic Announces Summer Schedule

Classic Arts News   New York Philharmonic Announces Summer Schedule
The New York Philharmonic has announced the schedules for its free summer concerts in New York-area parks, its summer programming at Avery Fisher Hall, and its annual residency at the Bravo! Vail Valley Music Festival in Colorado.

The parks concerts will run July 10-18 and will include concerts at the PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel, New Jersey; Prospect Park in Brooklyn, the Great Lawn in Central Park; Cunningham Park in Queens; Snug Harbor in Staten Island, Heckscher State Park in East Islip, Long Island; and Van Cortland Park in the Bronx.

Most of the concerts will feature Prokoviev's Suite From Romeo and Juliet and Tchaikovsky's Coronation March and Violin Concerto, with Jennifer Koh as soloist and associate conductor Xian Zhang on the podium.

The exceptions are a brass ensemble concert in Holmdel on July 10 (the program has not yet been announced) and the parks finale on the Great Lawn on July 18, at which Marin Alsop will lead John Adams' The Chairman Dances from Nixon in China, Prokofiev's Violin Concerto No. 1, and Beethoven's Symphony No. 5. Leila Josefowicz is the soloist. All of the concerts except for the Holmdel event will conclude with fireworks.

A complete schedule for the parks concerts is below.

The third annual Summertime Classic series at Avery Fisher Hall will run June 29-July 8; Bramwell Tovey, the music director of the Vancouver Symphony, will again conduct, leading music by Borodin, Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev, Bernstein, Copland, Aaron Jay Kernis, John Philip Sousa, Rossini, Rimsky-Korsakov, and Ravel. Soloists include pianist Alexander Kobrin; jazz pianist Marcus Roberts, who will play Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue; and pianists Benjamin Hochman and Orion Weiss.

As previously reported, the Philharmonic's fourth annual residency at Bravo! will run July 21-28; Tovey, Alsop, and Zhang will conduct. The residency opens with an all-Beethoven concert featuring pianist Jonathan Biss; other soloists include Josefowicz, pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet, Koh, and pianist Yuja Wang. In the final concert, Tovey will conduct and perform Rhapsody in Blue.
