Arts writer and critic Jack Kroll, who covered theatre and much more during 35 years at Newsweek magazine, died June 8 in Manhattan, according to The New York Times. The cause of death was colon cancer. Mr. Kroll was 74.
Mr. Kroll served as a writer, critic and editor at Newsweek over the years. He covered Broadway and major regional theatre and won a 1980 George Jean Nathan award for criticism. He also covered, books, movies, film and dance.
Mr. Kroll was born in New York City and was the son of Lester Kroll, a radio personality known under the name "Mr. Anthony" or John J. Anthony.
Mr. Kroll is survived by his wife, Joan Engels, a Newsweek photo editor, son Lawrence and daughter Sue, both of California.
