News NJ Shakes Goes Around the World With Adaptation of Verne Classic, Opening May 2 Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey's 2009 season opener, artistic director Bonnie J. Monte's new adaptation, Around the World in Eighty Days, based on the novel by Jules Verne, opens May 2.

The picaresque play's world-premiere production (which began April 29 in Madison, NJ, and runs to May 24) features a cast of six playing 30 roles: Robert Krakovski as Phileas Fogg, Kevin Isola as Fogg's valet Passepartout, David Foubert as Detective Fix, Edmond Genest as Sir Francis Cromarty and other globe-trotting characters, Jay Leibowitz and Maureen Sebastian. Monte directs her adaptation at the Shakespeare Theatre's Main Stage, The F.M. Kirby Shakespeare Theatre, 36 Madison Avenue at Lancaster Road in Madison, NJ.

According to Shakespeare Theatre of NJ, "This new theatrical adaptation brings to the stage the original 'amazing race' that has captured the hearts and imaginations of readers for generations."

The creative team for Around the World in Eighty Days includes set designer Michael Schweikhart, lighting designer Bruce Auerbach, costume designer Emily Pepper and sound designer Karin Graybash. Josiane Lemieux serves as production stage manager.

Monte begins her 19th season as artistic director of The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey with this production. In her tenure, she has directed 41 productions for the Theatre including A Streetcar Named Desire, King Lear, A Christmas Carol, Henry V and The Cherry Orchard.

In addition to Around the World in Eighty Days, Monte has also created a number of original translations/adaptations for the Main Stage including Pride and Prejudice, Marivaux's The Triumph of Love, Pirandello's Enrico IV, Ostrovsky's Artists and Admirers and Maeterlinck's The Blue Bird.
