New Jersey's George Street Playhouse has announced its 1999-2000 season for their touring shows, including the world premiere of In Between, And Then They Came for Me: Remembering the World of Anne Frank, Peacemaker, Tomboy, and Hip-Hop Shakespeare.
€ In Between, written by R.N. Sandberg, will tour Sept. 8 - May 28. Examining issues of self-esteem and social pressure, In Between tells of a new student at a school, Cue, who finds herself choosing between friendships with the popular Tad or the forgotten student, Barrett.
€ Peacemaker, written by David Holman, will tour Oct. 7 - May 28. The Blue People and The Red People have lived on either side of the Wall for years. Interaction is forbidden, and both communities live in an atmosphere of fear, suspicion and mistrust. So when Simp, a Red Person, sees a Blue Person for the first time -- the first response is panic. But, once they take the time to interact, they learn that underneath the skin, everybody's the same.
€ Tomboy, by Maria Decaney, will tour Nov. 9 - May 28. Returning for its second touring season, Tomboy tells the story of Melissa, the school's best athlete who hates to wear dresses. Her family and friends lovingly call her "Mo." Life is great, until a new student calls her a Tomboy, and Melissa begins to question who she really is.
€ And Then They Came for Me: Remembering the World of Anne Frank, by James Still, will tour Jan. 11 - May 25. The multi-media piece tells the familiar story of Anne Frank from the perspective of two of her surviving friends: Eva Schloss and Ed Silberberg. Eva and Ed "participate" on video while live actors re-enact their experiences as teenagers in hiding during World War II. € Finishing the touring season will be the world premiere of Hip Hop Shakespeare by Kim Hines, April 11 - May 28. The company will present excerpts of some of Shakespeare's most well-known plays, Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth, and A Midsummer Night's Dream to the tune of Hip-Hop music and contemporary references for students encountering Shakespeare for the first time.
