Though his new album "The Rising" just hit No. 1 on the charts and his tour with E Street Band has kicked off, don't expect to hear Bruce Springsteen's music on stage any time soon. The Boss musical project, Drive All Night, is not going forward to a full production, according to the venture's conceiver, Darrel Larson.

Drive All Night, which received a star-studded workshop at St. Clements Church in midtown Manhattan March 12, was a sung-through musical drama comprising famous and lesser-known tunes by The Boss. Larson was set to helm the work which had no dialogue, just Springsteen tunes forming a story arc.

Adam Pascal (Rent, Aida), Kerry Butler (Hairspray, Bat Boy) Yassmin Alers (Rent, The Capeman), John Hickok (Aida), Jodi Carmeli (Rent), Mandy Gonzalez (Dance of the Vampires, Aida), David St. Louis (Jesus Christ Superstar, The Scarlet Pimpernel) and John Jeffrey Martin (The Rocky Horror Show) comprised the cast of the workshop. Patrick Vaccariello (Cabaret, Jesus Christ Superstar and the upcoming Dance of the Vampires) musically directed the reading.

Larson told Playbill On-Line March 19 that "the Springsteen people" attended the performance and "now, it's just a matter of getting the rights."

The Springsteen stage project calls to mind some recent productions which have made it to the production phase. Among the pop-to stage cross-over include Mamma Mia! featuring ABBA music, Movin' Out scored with Billy Joel music, We Will Rock You featuring songs by Queen. — by Ernio Hernandez
