Mr, Hwang won a Tony Award in 1988 for M. Butterfly, his Broadway writing debut. The play also earned him Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle and John Gassner awards.He won two Obie Awards for FOB and Golden Child, two of his five plays produced at the New York Shakespeare Festival. Mr. Hwang has also written two screenplays and libretti for three operas.

The Beauty Queen of Leenane
Award to Author: Martin McDonagh
Award to Producer: Atlantic Theater Company, Randall L. Wreghitt, Chase Mishkin, Steven M. Levy, Leonard Soloway, Julian Schlossberg, Norma Langworthy, The Druid Theatre Company/Royal Court Theatre. Mr. McDonagh made his professional playwriting debut in Galway in 1996 with The Beauty Queen of Leenane. He won London's Evening Standard Award for Most Promising New Playwright when four of his plays were staged in London in the same season. Among his plays are The Lonesome West, The Lieutenant of Inishmore and The Cripple of Inishmaan.
