News Northlight Will Grow Grey Gardens and Cook Up Lin's Po' Boy Tango in 2008-09 The musical Grey Gardens will start to show signs of life as a regional theatre title this fall with the Midwest premiere of the Tony Award-nominated musical, at Northlight Theatre in suburban Chicago.

Northlight announced its 2008-09 season on March 13. Never shy about ambitious musicals (the troupe had a major hit with Side Show, for example) or world premieres (The Last 5 Years and the coming Better Late), Northlight will offer Doug Wright, Scott Frankel and Michael Korie's Grey Gardens (under the direction of artistic director BJ Jones) Nov. 12-Dec. 21.

The world premiere of Kenneth Lin's cultural cookbook play, Po' Boy Tango, about two disparate people making a meal together, is also on the menu.

The season in Skokie, IL, will launch with the Chicago premiere of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (Sept. 17-Oct. 26) adapted by Jeffrey Hatcher and directed by Jessica Thebus. The theatre will also stage the Chicago premiere of Theresa Rebeck's stamp-collection drama, Mauritius (Feb. 25-April 5, 2009), and the Chicago premiere of Martin McDonagh's award-winning, bloody dark comedy The Lieutenant of Inishmore (April 29-June 7, 2009).

Po' Boy Tango (Jan. 7-Feb. 15, 2009) is billed as "a celebration of the human spirit and the joy of cooking." It "tells the story of Richie Po, a Chinese immigrant who turns to his estranged friend Gloria to help him recreate his mother's 'Great Banquet.' Despite the challenges of shark fin soup, duck po' boy sandwiches and underlying cultural tensions, Richie and Gloria find common ground through their shared humor and the blending of traditional Taiwanese cuisine and African-American Soul Food. Helped by lessons from Po Mama's television cooking show, the two discover a deeper understanding of food, culture and the nature of friendship."

Po' Boy Tango comes to the Northlight stage for a full production after a successful workshop and reading as a part of the Northlight Interplay series — the third production to make that transition (Lady, Better Late). *

Northlight is under the direction of artistic director BJ Jones and executive director Timothy J. Evans. "Northlight presents theatrical works which reflect and challenge the values and beliefs of the community it serves while continuing to grow its reputation for launching world premieres, new musicals, heartwarming plays and intelligent dramas," according to its mission.
