Directed by Bob Balaban, Not a Genuine Black Man will officially open May 17. Daryl Roth is the producer. The play, according to production notes, tells the story of "Copeland's African-American family moving to one of the most exclusively white suburbs in America." Not a Genuine Black Man previously played engagements in Los Angeles and San Francisco.

Copeland — who is a San Francisco radio talk-show host as well as a comic, writer and actor — draws on his own childhood for his one-man play. When Copeland was eight, he and his family moved to an almost exclusively white neighborhood in San Leandro, CA.

Director Balaban produced and directed the Off-Broadway hit The Exonerated as well as the national tour and film versions of that work. He was also recently represented Off-Broadway with the revival of Family Secrets.

Not a Genuine Black Man plays Tuesday-Friday evenings at 8 PM, Saturdays at 4 and 8 PM and Sundays at 3 and 7 PM. Tickets, priced $65, are available by calling (212) 239-6200.
