Bed, Boys and Beyond, a gay-themed musical revue expanding on a 1999 New York International Fringe Festival show called All Male Lives of Y2-Gay, has proved a hit at the Duplex Cabaret Theatre in NYC’s Greenwich Village. The show, which began performances March 1, was set to end April 1 and then extended through June has now been extended through July.
Portions of the show, by lyricist-librettist Jeff Dobbins and composer Alfredo Alvarez, were seen in the summer 1999 Y2-Gay hit. The show explores the lives of five gay men searching for love, understanding and community in the post-closet era. Songs includes "Searchin' for a Euphemism," "Here in Chelsea," "Family Values," "The Seven-Week Itch," "May I Take Your Hand?" and more. The "ex-gay" movement is also addressed, and a satirical look at the Boy Scouts is offered.
Jeff Kalpak directs and Brett Kristofferson musical-directs a cast that includes Don Brewer, Chad Miller, Ryan Perry, Tom Stuart and James Wesley.
