News Off-Broadway Production of Rent Will Close in September The producers of the Off-Broadway production of Rent announced July 3 that the Pulitzer Prize-winning musical will play its final performance at New World Stages Sept. 9.

When it closes, the production will have played 32 previews and 450 performances.

Rent, which is written by Jonathan Larson and directed by Michael Greif, opened at New World Stages on Aug. 11, 2011.

The original production of Rent first opened Feb. 13, 1996, at New York Theatre Workshop, where it was hailed as a landmark in the history of the American musical. It transferred to Broadway’s Nederlander Theatre on April 29, 1996, and enjoyed a 12-year run. The musical went on to win every major best musical award, including the Tony Award, New York Drama Critics Circle Award, Drama Desk Award and the Outer Critics Circle Award.

Rent is one of only eight musicals to win the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
