Trevor Nunn's revival of Oklahoma! topped the roster of nominees (with 10 citations) for the 2002 Outer Critics Circle Awards, which also saw kudos go to yet-to-open Thoroughly Modern Millie (with 8 nominations) and Urinetown and Morning's at Seven (6 apiece.)

The Outer Critics Circle, an organization of over 75 out-of-town critics and writers, whose annual Award nominations unofficially kick off New York's theatrical awards season, cited Topdog/Underdog's Mos Def and Jeffrey Wright for a Special Achievement award for their performances in the just-laureled Pulitzer Prize-winning play.

Based on a single public performance in New York (and an invited dress rehearsal), Into the Woods managed to sneak under the wire and collect 4 nominations (Musical Revival, Director of a Musical, Actress and Featured Actress in a Musical.) Outer Critics Circle Awards honor both Broadway and Off-Broadway productions, with shows that opened Off-Broadway during the 2001-2002 season and then transferred to Broadway - such as Topdog, Metamorphoses, and Urinetown - being included in the Broadway categorization.

The winners of the following categories will be announced on April 29, with the awards ceremony held on May 23 at Sardi’s Restaurant.
