The musical, featuring a score by the Cabaret and Chicago songwriters, a libretto by David Thompson and direction and choreography by Susan Stroman, is performing at the Minneapolis after a successful Off-Broadway run at the Vineyard Theatre this spring, and in preparation for a Broadway bow at the Lyceum Theatre this October.
The Scottsboro Boys tells the true story nine African-American men who were unjustly accused of raping two white women in 1930s Alabama. As the opening number reveals, the story is told in the style of a minstrel show.
The cast features Joshua Henry (as hero Heywood Patterson), Colman Domingo (as Mr. Bones), Forrest McClendon (as Mr. Tambo), David Anthony Brinkely (as the Interlocutor), Jeremy Gumbs, Sean Bradford, Josh Breckenridge, Derrick Cobey, Rodney Hicks, Kendrick Jones, Julius Thomas III, Sharon Washington and Christian Dante White.
