The show, directed by Tisa Chang, began performances Oct. 29 at the West End Theatre (263 W. 86th Street in the Church of St. Paul & St. Andrew). Opening night is Nov. 2.

Cambodia Agonistes looks at the horrific civil war years in Cambodia during the 1970s, when the rule of the Khmer Rouge resulted in a genocide of the country's people. "Through traditional Cambodian dance, puppetry and an original score of 20 musical numbers," production notes state, the play "tells the story of a traditional Cambodian dancer, suffering psychosomatic blindness, who is found wandering the streets of New York. In her attempt to overcome her personal horrors and her homeland’s history she must make an enormous sacrifice."

The cast features Lydia Gaston, Ron Nakahara , John Baray, Ariel Estrada, Rebecca Lee Lerman, Virginia Wing, Derek Wong and special dance master artist Sam-oeun Tes, formerly a dancer of the Royal Ballet of Cambodia.

The set design is by Kaori Akazawa, costume design by Carol Ann Pelletier, lighting design by Victor En Yu Tan and mask design by Tom Lee. Jack Jarrett is the musical director.
