Chris Bauer, Jonathan Cake and Emily Mortimer star in Atlantic artistic director Neil Pepe's production, which opens March 5 and plays to March 29 at Atlantic's Linda Gross Theater, 336 West 20th Street.
According to Atlantic notes, "Jez Butterworth takes on domestic paranoia in his inimitably sly and incisive style in Parlour Song, which explores what happens when two ordinary people discover they hate who they have become. Butterworth reveals a world where all is not what it seems, when a demolitions expert suspects his wife is stealing from him."
Pepe helmed Butterworth's Mojo and The Night Heron for Atlantic.
"I think it's really about a couple that's reached their early to mid-40s and wake up and realize they don't really know how they've become what they've become," director Pepe told Playbill.com in the Jan. 16 Brief Encounter Q&A. "It's really about people trying to claim the life that they thought they were going to have. They wonder, how do I get back to the thing I really wanted? And the two different ideas of that, where the wife and husband don't really meet up, that's where the drama lies."
* Atlantic staged the U.S. premieres of the playwright's Olivier and Evening Standard Award-winning play Mojo, and The Night Heron. Butterworth made his directorial debut with the film adaptation of Mojo, and wrote and directed the film, "Birthday Girl," starring Nicole Kidman. Upcoming projects include screenplays for "Monte Carlo Story," also starring Kidman, and Warner Brothers' "Fair Game," which he co-wrote with his brother John Henry.
Atlantic artistic director Pepe also staged Butterworth's Mojo and The Night Heron. He recently directed the world premiere of Ethan Coen's Almost an Evening (three short plays) at Atlantic Stage 2. He staged the world premiere of David Mamet's Romance at Atlantic and the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles. He will direct the world premiere of Mamet's new play Keep Your Pantheon at the Center Theatre Group this spring.
Atlantic ensemble member Bauer recently appeared on Broadway in the revival of A Streetcar Named Desire, for which he earned an Outer Critics Circle Award nomination. On television, he can be seen on Alan Ball's HBO series "True Blood" and the CBS series "Numb3ers." Cake is now appearing in the world premiere of Almost an Evening at Atlantic Stage 2, having come directly from the Broadway cast of Lincoln Center Theater's Cymbeline. He appeared in Medea on Broadway, in London's West End and at BAM. Mortimer makes her Off-Broadway debut following stage roles in The Merchant of Venice and The Lights in the West End. She recently starred opposite Ryan Gosling in the acclaimed film "Lars and the Real Girl," in Woody Allen's "Match Point" and opposite Steve Martin in "The Pink Panther."
The design team for Parlour Song is scenic designer Robert Brill, costume designer Sarah Edwards, lighting designer Kenneth Posner, sound designer Obadiah Eaves and projection designer Dustin O'Neil.
Parlour Song will play Tuesday through Friday at 8 PM, Saturday at 2 PM & 8 PM and Sundays at 3 PM. The performance time on opening night March 5 will be 7 PM.
