The Public Theater celebrates the official opening of Patricia Ione Lloyd's play Eve's Song November 7. The new drama, directed by Jo Bonney, uses both humor and chilling suspense to detail the haunting of a Black family in America.
In Eve's Song, Deborah, played by De’Adre Aziza, is trying to keep things normal at home despite a messy divorce and her daughter coming out as queer. But as Black people continue to be killed beyond their four walls, the outside finds its way in, blurring the lines between family dynamics, politics, and the spirit world.
Performances of Eve's Song began October 21. Completing the cast of the world premiere are Karl Green as Mark, Ashley D. Kelley as Upendo, Vernice Miller as Spirit Woman, Kadijah Raquel as Lauren, Rachel Watson-Jih as Spirit Woman, and Tamara M. Williams as Spirit Woman.
The production continues its extended run through December 9 .
Eve's Song features scenic design by Riccardo Hernandez, costume design by Emilio Sosa, lighting design by Lap Chi Chu, sound design by Elisheba Ittoop, projection design by Hana S. Kim, hair, wigs, and makeup design by J. Jared Janas, and movement direction by Stefanie Batten Bland.
Lloyd is the 2017-2018 Tow Playwright in Residence at The Public and was a part of the 2015 Public Theater Emerging Writers Group. Her plays Pretty Hunger and Eve’s Song have been included on the Kilroy's List in 2016 and 2017.
