Jeffrey Richards and Jerry Frankel are producing the production, which was originally announced to have its world premiere in London this fall under the direction of Rupert Goold.

Set in a female penitentiary, the two-woman drama casts LuPone as Cathy, a longtime inmate with ties to a violent political organization, who pleads for parole from the warden, Ann, to be played by Metcalf. Tony-winning playwright Mamet will direct.

According to the producers, the play centers on "politics, money, religion and sex." The New York Times first reported the news of the production, which could still aim for a 2012 spring London debut. Richards and Frankel produced Mamet's A Life in the Theatre, Race, Speed-the-Plow and November in recent seasons.

LuPone has a long history with Mamet. The two first worked together on his drama The Woods in 1977. LuPone's Mamet appearances also include The Water Engine, Edmond, The Old Neighborhood and the film "State and Main." She is a Tony Award winner for her roles in Evita and Gypsy. She will be represented on Broadway this season with An Evening with Patti LuPone and Mandy Patinkin, which begins performances Nov. 16 at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre.

Metcalf earned a Tony nomination for her work in Mamet's 2008 Broadway play November. She also appeared in the short-lived Broadway revival of Neil Simon's Brighton Beach Memoirs. She is a three-time Emmy Award winner for her work on "Roseanne." She will appear in a London revival of Long Day's Journey Into Night, which begins in April 2012.
