The production, which features a translation by Paul Schmidt, continues through Oct. 12 at The Pearl Theatre.

Helmed by artistic director Hal Brooks, the cast features Pearl Rachel Botchan as Yelena, Robin Leslie Brown as Marina, Bradford Cover as Astrov, Dominic Cuskern as Professor Serebriakov, Brad Heberlee as Waffles, Chris Mixon as Vanya, Carol Schultz as Mrs. Vointsky, Joie Bauer as Workman and Michelle Beck as Sonya.

Here's how the production is billed: "Chekhov's slyly comic and quietly powerful classic invites us into a world of agony, ecstasy, and absurdity. When the arrival of a worldly professor and his bewitching wife shatters the peace of Vanya and Sonya's country estate, a series of flirtations, disappointments, confessions, and revelations follow as this motley crew demand their moment in the sun — but never seem to know what to do when they get it."

"At the start of our 31st Season, it was important for us to do a show that emphasizes our company," Brooks said in a  previous statement. "Uncle Vanya is a play I've always wanted to direct. It is fundamentally crafted for actors and our company has the advantage of years working together onstage — it's going to be moving, funny, poignant, and most of all, an ensemble piece."

The creative team includes Jason Simms (sets), Seth Reiser (lighting), Barbara A. Bell (costumes), Florian Staab (sound), Kate Farrington (dramaturg) and Kevin Clutz (production stage manager). Founded in 1984, The Pearl, which is New York's only classical resident company, "has produced a body of work encompassing the full breadth of theatre history, from ancient Greek tragedy to contemporary works rooted in the classics."
