The new work "is a retelling through flashbacks and dream sequences," according to press notes. "This one-act reading is a window into the minds of two troubled teens on their journey to survive while struggling with the weight of the memories of their past. With a compelling, lush score by Brett Roelofs, a new book based on a true story by Jack Donahue, and a brilliant cast of some of Broadway's finest young actors, Birthday Boy gives a voice to a community that may feel alone with their shame, and provides the courage and support to come out and come home to a world that is ready to hear their story."
The cast features Blaine Krauss (Disney's The Lion King), Michelle Dowdy (Hairspray), Tommy McDowell (American Idiot), Kent Overshown (Porgy and Bess), Brian Drummy (Damn Yankees, My Fair Lady), Kyla Walker, Drew Arisco and Tara Morgan.
Mitchell Walker (A Brass Act, A Shining Hour) directs with musical direction by Matthew Sullivan.
The event is produced by Janine Lee Papio of AKA Studio Productions ("Rules of Cool," "photo op").
