Peters joins a small pantheon of actresses — including Ethel Merman, Angela Lansbury and Tyne Daly — who have played the musical theatre's most infamous stage mother in the Jule Styne-Arthur Laurents-Stephen Sondheim musical. Gypsy, which also features John Dossett as Herbie and Tammy Blanchard as Louise, officially opens May 1.

Bernadette Peters won her Tony Awards for her performances in Andrew Lloyd Webber's Song & Dance and the 1999 revival of Irving Berlin's Annie Get Your Gun.
