Cult film director John Waters introduced the press preview of the new musicalization of his Hairspray, likening seeing his work in stage form to a trip to "The Twilight Zone."

Hairspray, based on Waters' most popular film, is set in 1962 Baltimore, where the girl with the biggest hair and the best moves can obtain fame on the city's number one dance revue, "The Corny Collins Show." Plain Jane Tracy Turnblad (Marissa Jaret Winokur) defeats the show's reigning queen, Amber Von Tussle (Laura Bell Bundy), and goes after the most popular boy, Link Larkin (Matthew Morrison). But the girl's evil parents want revenge. Turnblad's own parents (played by Dick Latessa and Harvey Fierstein in the Divine role), however, are there to make sure Tracy stays on top. Marc Shaiman ("South Park") and Scott Wittman wrote the score with a book by Mark O'Donnell and Thomas Meehan (The Producers). Jack O'Brien (The Full Monty) directs with choreography by Jerry Mitchell.
