Based on the Herman Raucher film and novel, Summer of '42 stars Kate Jennings Grant as Maine war bride Dorothy, who teaches 15-year-old Hermie (newcomer Driscoll) a bittersweet lesson in love. Composer-lyricist David Kirshenbaum and librettist Hunter Foster (Urinetown) wrote the musical, previously seen at the Goodspeed and Ohio's Victoria Theatre before landing at Off-Broadway's Variety Arts Theatre.
