Murder Ballad, which played an acclaimed Off-Broadway run last season, was conceived by Julia Jordan with book and lyrics by Jordan and music and lyrics by indie rock singer/songwriter Juliana Nash. The TUTS production runs through April 27 under the direction of Bruce Lumpkin. Michelle Gaudette choreographs.
Molina (Sweeney Todd, Rock of Ages, The Skivvies) plays Sara with Burkhardt (Hair) as Tom. Murder Ballad also features Kristin Warren (Cabaret) as the Narrator and Pat McRoberts (Miss Saigon) as Michael.
TUTS takes a page from the immersive New York staging. According to press materials, "During the production, theatre goers will be part of the action thanks to a fully operational bar, which serves as the story’s setting."
Performances take place in Zilkha Hall, a 500-seat theatre located in Hobby Center.
Murder Ballad, according to TUTS, "tells the sultry story of passion’s dark side. A love triangle gone wrong, the show centers on Sara, an Upper West Sider who seemingly has it all but whose downtown past lingers enticingly and dangerously in front of her. This sexy new rock musical explores the complications of love, the compromises we make, and the betrayals that can ultimately undo us."
The creative team includes musical director/conductor Jack Beetle, assistant director Marley Wisnoski, fight captain Jeff Wisnoski, lighting designer Christina Giannelli, sound designer Andrew Harper and set designer Laura Hawkes.
TUTS Underground series "features productions that are edgy, captivating and occasionally a bit risqué."
