The newly created Richard Seff Award "honors a female and male character actor, 50 years of age or older, for the best performance in a supporting role in a Broadway or Off-Broadway production." The award was created to compliment the five-decade-old Clarence Derwent Awards, which annually honor "the most promising female and male performers on the New York metropolitan scene." The winners of the Seff Awards were Margo Martindale for Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and Tom Aldredge for Twentieth Century. Seff, a longtime New York agent, actor, playwright and librettist was present at the ceremony.
The Derwent Awards went to John Tartaglia for Avenue Q and Anika Noni Rose for Caroline, or Change.
