News PHOTO CALL: Rent Takes Final Bow Off-Broadway The Off-Broadway production of Rent, representing a rethought approach to the material by members of the Broadway creative team, including director Michael Greif and music supervisor and arranger Tim Weil, plays its final performance at New World Stages Sept. 9.

The production played 32 previews and 450 performances.

Rent, which is written by composer-lyricist-librettist Jonathan Larson and directed by Michael Greif, opened at New World Stages on Aug. 11, 2011. It previously won the Best Musical Tony Award and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

Rent Takes Final Bow Off-Broadway


The original production of Rent first opened Feb. 13, 1996, at New York Theatre Workshop, where it was hailed as a landmark in the history of the American musical. It transferred to Broadway’s Nederlander Theatre on April 29, 1996, and enjoyed a 12-year run. The musical went on to win every major Best Musical award, including the Tony, New York Drama Critics Circle Award, Drama Desk Award and the Outer Critics Circle Award.

Rent is one of only eight musicals to win the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

The final Off-Broadway cast includes Shaleah Adkisson, Nicholas Christopher, Anthony Fedorov, Josh Grisetti, Emma Hunton, Rashad Naylor, MJ Rodriguez, Natalie Wachen, Margot Bingham, Amber Iman, Marcus Paul James, Ben Thompson, Taylor Trensch, Morgan Weed, Xavier Cano, Sean Michael Murray and Genny Lis Padilla. Choreography is by Larry Keigwin.
