Billy Crudup may have the title role, but where would he be without his Dr. Treves and Mrs. Kendal? Rupert Graves plays the good doctor, while Burton, fresh from her much-praised fall star turn as Hedda Gabler, plays the good actress. The Elephant Man opened April 14 at the Royale Theatre.

In The Elephant Man, Crudup stars as John Merrick, a hideously-deformed circus attraction abused by his keepers and rescued by a scientist (Graves), who treats him civilly but makes him something of a faddish curiosity among the intelligentsia of Victorian England. Burton is featured as a London actress who shares a special relationship with Merrick. Sean Mathias (Dance of Death) directs the revival, Broadway's first for the Bernard Pomerance play, which first opened at the Booth Theatre in 1979.
