Paulo Szot, who earned a Tony Award for creating the role in the Broadway revival, is currently on leave to star in the Dmitri Shostakovich opera The Nose, which will begin performances March 5 at the Met. Pittsinger filled in for Szot in South Pacific during his previous opera commitments.
Pittsinger will remain with the production through March 21. South Pacific understudy William Michals will perform the role for the week of March 23. Szot is scheduled to return March 30.
Pittsinger made his Metropolitan Opera debut as Truelove in The Rake's Progress. He went on to appear in the MET productions of Don Carlo, La Boheme, Die Zauberflote and Giulio Cesare.

The Lincoln Center Theater production has musical staging by Christopher Gattelli, sets by Michael Yeargan, costumes by Catherine Zuber, lighting by Donald Holder and sound by Scott Lehrer. South Pacific boasts a 30-piece orchestra performing the musical's original orchestrations by Robert Russell Bennett and dance and incidental music arrangements by Trude Rittmann.
